Pipeline Installations - Changxing Island linking Chongming Island with Pudong

2020-03-01

The Chongming Island - Changxing Island - Pudong New Area No. 5 Ditch LNG Station Pipeline Project stands as a monumental achievement in Shanghai's infrastructure development, significantly enhancing the city's energy security and distribution capabilities. This critical project, part of Shanghai's broader livelihood initiatives, has been meticulously planned over a decade and constructed over six years, reflecting the long-term commitment to improving the region's energy infrastructure.

The main construction components of this extensive project include tunneling works, pipeline installation, station facilities, and related ancillary infrastructure. Spanning a total length of 24.55 kilometers, the pipeline system is designed to transport liquefied natural gas (LNG) efficiently and safely from Chongming Island through Changxing Island to the Pudong New Area. A particularly challenging aspect of the project involves crossing the Yangtze River twice via tunnels, covering a combined distance of approximately 15.2 kilometers. Line A extends from Chongming Island to Changxing Island, while Line B connects Changxing Island to the Pudong New Area.

Of particular note is the contribution of SINCHOLD, which was contracted for the pipeline laying works along an 8-kilometer stretch. This segment required specialized expertise and advanced engineering solutions to ensure seamless integration with the overall pipeline network. SINCHOLD's involvement underscores the company's capability in handling complex, large-scale infrastructure projects that demand precision and reliability.

The tunneling works, especially those beneath the Yangtze River, presented significant technical challenges due to the river's depth and flow dynamics. Engineers had to employ cutting-edge tunnel boring machines (TBMs) capable of operating under high water pressure while maintaining structural integrity. The pipelines were specially coated and reinforced to withstand corrosive marine environments and potential seismic activity.

In addition to the physical construction, the project included the establishment of an LNG station and ancillary facilities essential for operational efficiency and safety. These facilities incorporate state-of-the-art monitoring systems to ensure continuous oversight of the pipeline's performance and rapid response to any issues.

The successful completion of this project not only enhances Shanghai's energy supply but also sets new standards for infrastructure development in challenging terrains, which exemplifies the synergy between government planning and private sector expertise, showcasing how strategic partnerships can deliver projects of national importance. By integrating advanced technologies and rigorous construction practices, the Chongming-Changxing-Pudong LNG Pipeline Project ensures reliable energy delivery, contributing to the sustainable development and economic vitality of the region.
